I will continue to post Army stories on this blog because I am 76 years old and I believe Army life is better than what many young people experience.
Seniors - now you are alone. Maybe mom and dad are paying for college when classes start back up, or maybe you're going to work when a job opens up. The army is recruiting.
Contact the recruiter first. Some of you seniors are already Facebook friends with Jeff Escott at Rolla Army Recruiting, so it shouldn't be difficult.

1 - Enter the form. Are you in shape? Get in better shape. running Run until you coordinate your pace and breathing to the point where you can run for hours. In other words, be a runner. Start slow and build up. Do push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups, and walk a lot, then put on your boots and carry your backpack. Walk about 40 pounds more.
2 - Study the ASVAB. It doesn't matter if you're at the top of your class, study before you take the ASVAB. The ASVAB is a military IQ test that is kept on your record while you are in the military. You want to score as high as possible, especially in English (language arts) and math.
3 - Tell the employer everything about your life. You've smoked pot and never smoked again, or tried it and didn't like it, or never touched it. Traffic tickets or trouble with the law, he can get away with some things (sorry). Medical problems You had a broken bone as a little kid, anything.
5 - Choose a job in the army. Get online, find out what they do, find reviews from current and former soldiers. Recruiters can say a lot. Talk to me and I'll tell you what I think.

6 - You may need to travel in advance to MEPS (Military Entry Processing Station) in St. in Louis
7 - You will receive a shipping date for the main training. Until that day, keep building your fitness and stamina.
. Your first stop is the Reception Battalion. That week that didn't count for the main training was eternally miserable. Everything is different, they put themselves in a form and say what to do, then wait for something to happen. Due to COVID-19, social distancing will be practiced, the structures will be double and the treatment groups will be small. On the first day, you will receive your PT (physical training) uniform, put it on and then pack your civilian clothes, including your cell phone, which you will return after the main training session. On the second day, men have their hair cut, women have their hair tied in a bun or cut to neck length, they are given uniforms and given ID cards. Next day shots, dental exams and eye exams. The fourth day is the physical assessment test. It's mostly done with processing, but it may be in the lobby for a few more days until enough recruits are made to fill the main training company.
THE DAY OF ARRIVAL AT THE BASIC TRAINING COMPANY: That's when you see pictures of the sergeants walking through the interns. It has always been amazing and awesome. Just to get your attention, you are now in the army and you have to do what the sergeant tells you. However, due to COVID-19, there are some changes. The drill sergeants don't get in your face, they're five feet away. Instead of being divided into platoons of 60 soldiers, platoons will now consist of approximately 25 soldiers, resulting in a basic training company of 100 soldiers instead of the usual 240. The barracks are being rearranged to put more distance between the interns' dormitories. Basic training is just as difficult now as it was before. Drill Sergeant isn't unnecessarily brutal (unless you mark one), but it's physically demanding, 12-14 hour days six days a week (you love Sundays). He is a professional and covers many subjects, so he "goes away".

Below is the regular schedule for basic combat training, but due to COVID-19, the first two weeks of classes are out if possible, and frequent testing for COVID-19 is done. The company continues after regular training. The biggest difference will be the small groups. I'm not suggesting it will get easier, but it will get better. As in school, smaller class sizes lead to better teaching and learning. Now might be a great time to do some basic training.
