Early Monday morning, Mounties said they were made aware of a small group organizing during a larger protest in Coots, which led to 11 arrests.
They say they had information that the group had a cache of weapons and ammunition in three trailers. Officers seized long guns, pistols, several sets of body armor, a machete, a large quantity of ammunition and high-capacity firearms magazines.
In light of the news, protest organizer Marco van Hugenbos said the decision to pull out of Coutts was made on Tuesday morning.
"We were infiltrated by an extremist element... Our intention was to remain peaceful here," he said. "To continue that message, we want Coutts to leave in peace and return to our families."

Supt. Roberta McCall of the RCMP told reporters around 2 p.m. On Monday, while there were not many incidents of violence, investigations began shortly after the initial protesters arrived.
McKale said RCMP began receiving information about possible threats, which took time to investigate and led to the arrests Sunday night.
"Since then we've made one more arrest related to that, an increase in violence against members, including this afternoon when someone broke into one of our checkpoints and beat up one of our members on the road," McCall said.

McCale also added that the various allegations and various actions created a situation where the Mounties were investigating a conspiracy to commit murder.
In another release Monday, RCMP said two more people have been arrested in connection with the border blockade.
RCMP say they arrested a man on the highway leading to the protest site. Police say they seized two guns from his car. He remains in custody.
In another incident, around 12:45 p.m., a semi truck approached an RCMP checkpoint north of the Milk River. RCMP say the driver sped up and drove toward police, but swerved at the last minute and crashed into several traffic cones along the road. The driver was arrested near the spot for offenses under the Criminal Code.

Public protests against the coronavirus vaccine mandate have blocked or completely blocked access to normally busy border crossings for two weeks.
Speaking at an unrelated event in Calgary on Monday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said the successful police operation now clears the way for authorities to continue more enforcement without fear of escalating violence.
"Now that the RCMP have successfully addressed this potential threat, they will, I understand, continue to pursue enforcement against others involved in the blockade," he said.
Kenny also said that the state government has got enough heavy equipment and people to work to help Mounties remove commercial vehicles blocking the highway.

RCMP say a large farm tractor and a semi-truck tried to ram a police vehicle Sunday evening, "an example of the militant mentality of a small section of the opposition," it said in a statement.
The driver of the tractor has been identified and police are working to locate and arrest him, according to RCMP.

Marco van Huygenbos, one of the organizers of the truck convoy blockade, says the protesters are walking peacefully along the border.
“A lot of videos were circulating. There were many boys standing around. I have seen no evidence that this is actually true. I think they have other motives," he said.
Police said a small group organized as part of the protest "showed readiness to use force against the police if attempts were made to disrupt the blockade".
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said police stopped heavy equipment on the highway north of the protest, and he said officers told them to back off.

He says they did. Savinkoff said the excavators then parked on the side of the road and police suspected they intended to continue the protest.
He said police issued dozens of tickets Sunday to vehicles involved in the protest, most of which were issued under the state's Traffic Safety Act and other traffic safety laws.
The Canada Border Services Agency said Saturday that services were suspended at the busy crossing, and Savinkoff said the same situation Sunday.
A number of industry groups, including representatives of the manufacturing, retail and beef sectors, have expressed their dismay at the continued disruption at the Coutts border.

Canadian manufacturers and exporters said last week that $44 million worth of goods typically cross the border at Coutts every day, or $15.9 billion annually.
"I would say overall, net-net - the impact on the economy has been fairly modest, but the inconvenience has been huge," he said.
Kenney said the provincial government is working with police and sheriffs to ensure Alberta's five other U.S. ports of entry continue to operate.
Speaking to the media, Kenney was also asked about reports that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told his caucus he will use a previously unused emergency act to give the federal government additional powers to control protests against the anti-vaccination mandate across the country.

"The view I have, which I expressed to the premier at the First Ministers' Forum this morning, is that it's not necessary, at least in the context of Alberta," Kenney said.
“We have all the necessary statutory powers and operational capabilities to enforce, now that we've encountered, now that the RCMP has encountered, a terrorist cell that can lead to violence.
“And so we have the tools now, and we already have very strong laws in Alberta.
He reiterated that the "cautious" plan to roll back the state's health care mandates is about getting life back to normal, not responding to protests.

However, he said he believes the protesters have a lot of dissatisfaction with the federal government and its mandates. He also pointed to the Alberta Federation of Labor (AFL).
"You have the NDP's Alberta Federation of Labor in court because we're trying to get a judge to make six-year-olds wear masks indefinitely," he said.
The AFL said Monday it has joined a group of parents of students with disabilities in seeking a court order to block an order to remove masks in Alberta schools.
In an interview, AFL president Gil McGowan called the order premature, reckless and irresponsible, adding that he was asking for the mask order to stay until March 1, not indefinitely.

He also said he would file a formal complaint with the RCMP and the Edmonton Police Service about Kenny's comments. He said staff at the AFL office in Edmonton had been sent home on Monday.
"What the premier has done is basically say go to the Alberta Federation of Labour, so we take that as a threat," McGowan said. "He crossed the line."
McGowan said Kenney's call to "silence" any protests was just a "fig leaf". This copy is for your personal non-commercial use only. It exclusively obtained a geographic breakdown of federal gun registry data that shows more than 287,000 "unrestricted" guns are registered in Canada's largest city.
They are rifles and shotguns, weapons that federal conservatives say are the tools of the trade for law-abiding hunters and farmers. About 4,000 are labeled "combination" weapons, which have more than one barrel, typically "chambering different calibers of ammunition," the RCMP said.
These are not police department weapons or police service weapons. Those are guns held by individuals that have been required by law to be registered in the Federal Firearms Registry since 2003, but will no longer be when Prime Minister Stephen Harper follows through on his promise to end the registration of long guns.
After Bill C-19 passes the Senate, as expected, all "uncontrolled" gun data will be destroyed, over the objections of the Canadian Chiefs Association.
