In Death Valley National Park, north of Barstow, California, is Rainbow Canyon. Nothing special, just one canyon in an area full of them, almost indistinguishable from its neighbors in an area mostly populated by snakes. Rainbow Canyon is in the desert of eastern California, where the population is sparse and the airspace is wide open. It is also surrounded by military bases, bombing ranges, maneuvering areas and radars – the perfect place to hone your military piloting skills. Nearby sites include Edwards AFB, China Lake Naval Air Station, and Plant 42 (where Lockheed and Northrop build advanced aircraft).
If the desert isn't your thing, EA-18 and F-15E aircrews from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, and Mountain Home Force Base, Idaho, frequently board aircraft on visual routes 1350 and 1355, which pass through the national parks in the beautiful Cascade Mountains. Because of the scenic views and the pleasure of flying, these routes are simply called the "million dollar trip". The routes are long, with many mountains and hills in the national park. The area around Bumping Lake (and the Bumping River) below VR-1355 has a popular camping spot that pilots use as a visual reference.

Many bases have reported conducting large-scale drills so they can warn civilian pilots to avoid the airspace. So look for your local base; they won't tell you the specific routes the planes will fly, but with a little luck and work, you can pick a spot and watch the planes fly by all day long.
