40 years ago, the high seas hunt in the South Atlantic nearly ended with the sinking of the first aircraft carrier since World War II.

From Taranto To The Falkland Islands

Just before 3 a.m. on May 2, 1982, the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano was hit by two torpedoes fired by the British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror.

The cruiser's electrical system was damaged and it was unable to send a distress signal. Within 45 minutes, it sank to the bottom of the South Atlantic, taking with it 323 crew members.

At that time, Britain was at war with Argentina. That April, Argentina seized the Falkland Islands, prompting the British to send a naval task force to reclaim the islands, which they had controlled since 1833.

The Belgrano sinking was only the second time a submarine had sunk an enemy ship since World War II, and it is one of the most memorable moments of the war.

While the invader was firing on Belgrano, another major naval engagement was taking place a few hundred kilometers to the north. Argentina's sole aircraft, the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo, attempted to locate the British aircraft escorting the incoming task force.

Named after the date of the Argentine Revolution in 1810, Veinticinco de Mayo was a Colossus-class frigate built by the British and commissioned in 1945 as HMS Venerable.

She served with the British Pacific Fleet until 1947 and was sold to the Netherlands in 1948. In the fifties she was renovated with a corner deck and a steam catapult. After a most uneventful run with the Dutch Navy, the carrier was destroyed by a boiler fire in 1968.

She was then sold to Argentina, who repaired and improved the carrier, entering service as ARA Veinticinco de Mayo in 1969. At 630 feet long and 80 feet wide, it could carry 24 aircraft and a crew of 1,300.

Veinticinco de Mayo supported Argentina's invasion of the Falklands on 2 April 1982 with an air wing of eight A-4Q Skyhawk fighters, four S-2E Tracker submarines, and two SH-3 Sea King helicopters.

After Britain announced its intention to return the Falkland Islands, the Argentine Navy planned to intercept the Royal Navy as it arrived in the South Atlantic.

Argentinian ships were deployed in pincer traffic, 200 kilometers north and south of the Falklands.

Veinticinco de Mayo, along with the Type 42 destroyers Hércules and Santísima Trinidad (also built in Britain) and the Gearing-class destroyer Comodoro Py, formed the northern part of the isthmus. ARA General Belgrano and his two escorts formed the south.

A third Argentine task force of three Drummond-class corvettes, armed with Exocet anti-aircraft missiles, also operated to the north, although further from Veinticinco de Mayo and its escort.

On the night of May 1, Veinticinco de Maio's aircraft discovered the British fleet and prepared to attack.

The main targets were the two British carriers leading the flotilla, HMS Invincible and HMS Hermes, carrying around 20 Sea Harrier jump planes that were crucial to the British operation.

But Veinticinco de Mayo's Skyhawks couldn't attack. When they were fully loaded with fuel and weapons, they needed wind to launch from the carrier, and there would be no wind for at least 12 hours, a rarity in this part of the Atlantic.

The Argentines could not wait and stopped the attack. At midnight, a British Sea Harrier found Veinticinco de Maio and his escorts. A few hours later the Belgrano sank.

With the sinking of Belgrano, Argentine commanders realized how vulnerable their ships - especially their carriers - were. They ordered the ships to return to port. Little did they know, the British were already in pursuit.

The British made it a top priority to knock out the Argentine navy, especially the Veinticinco de Mayo. Three nuclear attack submarines from Task Force 324 followed the Argentines as the rest of the British fleet sailed south.

The task force consisted of HMS Conqueror, a Churchill-class attack submarine tasked with patrolling south of the Falklands, and Swiftsure-class attack submarines Splendid and Spartan, assigned to the northwest and northeast sectors respectively.

The British, now aware of Veinticinco de Mayo's location, sent HMS Splendid after her and began a nine-day pursuit.

Due to persistent boiler problems, Veinticinco de Mayo was slower than the sub's maximum speed, but the carrier's zig-zag course in shallow waters forced Splendid to slow down.

The carrier's escorts took up position 5 miles off her port, bow and starboard side. Four S-2E Trackers flew six-hour missions 100 miles from the carrier to drop sonobuoys and use their surface-search radars. They also used electromagnetic sensors to listen for radio signals going to or from Splendid.

Two Sea King helicopters patrolled closer to the carrier, using sonars that could detect submarines up to 3 miles away.

When the Argentines found what they thought was a substrate, they attacked with Mark 44 torpedoes or Mk 54 depth charges dropped from the trackers.

Despite Argentina's defense, Splendid closed. On 3 May it was close enough to make visual contact with the Veinticinco de Mayo escorts. A day later, although she had to dive deep to avoid trackers, her sonar picked up the carrier and her escorts.

However, by the time Splendid was within torpedo range, the carrier and her escorts had entered Argentine waters and continued sailing north.

The British wanted to portray their actions as purely defensive and decided not to attack Argentine forces in their own waters. A brilliant break
