1000hp 5.7 hemi

1000hp 5.7 Hemi - Of all the powerful V-8 engines that earn their stripes on the streets and lanes of America, few hold more mystique than the Chrysler 426 Hemi. Nicknamed the elephant for its enormous dimensions, weight and power figures, the legend of the engine has long since outgrown its reality. The latest chapter in the Hemi book is the new Mopar Elephant Crate engine. It debuted today at the 2018 SEMA show under the hood of the 1968 Dodge Super Charger concept, and we thought an engine of legendary stature deserved its own post.

The first 1000 hp crate engine offered by the automaker, the Mopar Helephant is an obvious evolution of the breed, electronically controlled fuel, displacement coupling and modern technology producing 1000 horsepower and 950 lb.-ft. the monster Built on an aluminum block borrowed from Mopar's Dodge Challenger Drag Pak vehicles, it features wide, weight-saving tires, up to 100 pounds compared to the Hellcat block, Chrysler says, and a solid core. Equipped with a 4.0-inch stroke and 4.13-inch bore, it inhales through a bulky 3.0-liter twin-bolt supercharger with roughly 15 pounds of boost. (The Hellcat engine uses a 2.4-liter supercharger, and the Hellcat Demon has a 2.7-liter supercharger.) Construction includes forged pistons and a special high-lift cam; the valves and valve train are borrowed from the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, while the valve covers are taken from the Hellcat Redeye. Far from just a block and rotating assembly, the package includes a water pump, flywheel, front oil pan, supercharger with throttle body, fuel injectors and coil packs.

Monitors the included Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which works in unison with the Power Distribution Center, Engine Belt, Chassis Belt, Accelerator Pedal, Ground Bridge, oxygen sensors, charge air temperature sensors, fuel pump control module, and bus camera interface device. To the delight of tuners everywhere, Mopar says the PCM is unlocked but tuned to put out 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque from the factory.

As with the Hellcrate engine that debuted last year, Mopar will also offer a Front Wheel Drive Essential Equipment (FEAD) kit, which includes an alternator, power steering pump, belts and pulleys, and will offer various components and parts individually

Never miss a marketing opportunity, Mopar will ship each kit with the Elephant logo and include information sheets with requirements and installation tips. Look for the Elephant crate engine to hit the internet in Q1 2019.

The 350hp VW Jetta GLI Concept is the next-level GLI. "76 Jeep Wagoneer" recalls Greg Huizenga, a mechanical engineer from Middleville, Michigan. "We've done a complete restoration on it, almost back to stock." But then I decided I wanted to clean it up a bit under the hood and then I figured I'd have to remove the engine to make it easier. Then I realized I could rebuild the engine and then I realized I could build a bigger engine. Then it snowballed from there."

The Wagoneer ended up being the first in a series of Jeep builds for Huizenga. This eventually led to a six-year '83 Cherokee Wide Track project, which he completed in 2016, but just a year after putting the finishing touches on the project, the Jeep was totaled by a drunk driver. That left Huizenga wondering what to do next.

Not wanting to lose the low-end response of a small turbo, Huizenga opted for a rather unique 66mm and 88mm turbo setup. The setup also uses dual wastegates, one bypassing the smaller turbo and the other draining into the main exhaust, after the turbo. The result is an incredibly linear powerband and 875 horsepower at the wheels from the 5.7-liter Hemi. Huizenga estimates it has about 1,000 horsepower at the crankshaft.

"I think the 75 is a continuation of the 83," he explains. "I hesitate to call it a pro-touring build because it doesn't really have all those amenities, but it's a similar concept. I wanted to build something that was reliable and could do a lot of different things pretty well, and I think I accomplished that—I drove 500 miles to MoParty, I got through the crap out of the event and made it home without a hitch.”.

For most of us, seeing a vintage full-size Jeep being whipped in an autocross or sent down the drag strip is a pretty unusual sight. Huizenga's build takes this notion to the next level due to the fact that this Cherokee can truly hold its own in any environment: Huizenga took first place in the truck class for both the SpeedStop and Autocross by MoParty, and then moved on to racing. . in the middle of 10 years in a strip using the same set of tires.

The Jeep's interior is all business with Kirkey aluminum racing seats, a manual transmission and plenty of performance gauges. There are also a few trick switches stuck on some old, cast pistons mounted between the seats.

As you'd expect, the Cherokee is anything but stock under the skin. The Jeep sits on a second-generation Chevy C10 chassis that has been shortened by seventeen inches in the middle, while the front fender has been lowered by four inches. "I did this to get the suspension mounting points where I wanted them to get the proper geometry," says Greg. "And with a dropped frame, the whole engine is above the frame, so it's really easy to work on."

Suspension consists of No Limit Engineering's Wide Ride IFS setup with Ridetech coilovers up front, while the rear is a modified version of the factory C10 hardware with custom coilovers and an adjustable track bar. "The rear axle is an old Yates Racing Cup car unit, so it's a floating 9in," he notes. "And I'm running 3.70 speed with a Detroit wardrobe."

At MoParty, Huizenga competed in the Grand Champion competition and won the truck category. His Jeep was fast on the drag strip and on the autocross track!

With front-wheel drive, Huizenga moves through the gears with a modern Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission that it sourced from a late-model Dodge Challenger. Greg also did some tweaking here.

"It's kind of a stack - I use the gear kit from the R/T for 1-4 gears and the close ratio 5th and 6th gears from the Hellcat. I didn't want to use first gear on the Hellcat: it's very hard on the clutches when you're trying to do the towing stuff. For example, the R/T's 2.97 first gear works great. I can get out to about 5400 rpm from two steps with seven pounds of boost."

Speaking of momentum: The engine is another area where Greg bucked convention. Power comes from a fully warmed-up 5.7-liter Gen III Hemi, but Huizenga is quick to dispel any notion that this is some kind of high-priced exotic build. "There's really not much to say about the engine itself - it has connecting rods, bearings and a camshaft. To handle boost, I use Molnar connecting rods and Mahle pistons, along with upgraded valve springs and injectors.

Beyond the killer looks and performance, the Jeep is a real driver. Huizenga drove it 500 miles to the 2020 MoParty and put 37,000 miles on the Hemi Gen 3 engine after installing it.

He originally built a single turbo setup for the Cherokee, but soon decided he wanted more. "I have a friend who works at Bullsye Power Turbochargers and he had an idea he wanted to try. He wanted a very smooth power curve that starts very low in the rev range for autocross stuff, so he wanted to try a very little one there. We put one of their S366 66mm turbos in it and it made 720 horsepower to the tires and was great for autocross. But it didn't make enough power—it could hit 10.30s in the quarter mile with slicks, and I wanted to go 9s. But I also didn't want to go to a bigger single turbo and lose low-end response."

The solution was a complex turbo setup. “I left the small turbo there and added 80mm
